Who is behind SCYLAR One and ScylarOS?

Alpha Management GmbH from Iserlohn, Germany, develops ScylarOS, a smartphone operating system of its own – not Android and not iOS, but the third choice alongside iOS and Android. With SCYLAR One, the company sells a new Fairphone 5 set up with ScylarOS for €849 including VAT, with no subscription. The system includes a personal AI that its owner gives a name of their own: the language model and speech recognition run on the device, and a larger AI via the company’s servers is only used with the user’s consent.

What is not finished yet in ScylarOS?

ScylarOS is in beta. As of today:

  • Many well-known apps that rely on services from the large platform makers (banking, payments, copy-protected streaming) do not run or only with limitations.
  • Calls over 4G (VoLTE) are not guaranteed with every network.
  • NFC and contactless payment cannot be used yet.
  • In an emergency call, the location is not yet sent automatically to the emergency centre.
  • The device no longer receives system updates from Fairphone; Alpha Management GmbH delivers the ScylarOS updates.

The full list is in the beta notes (German). Detailed explanations of the system and the assistant are on the pages What is ScylarOS?, Your AI – your best friend in your phone and ScylarOS, Android, iOS compared.
