SCYLAR OneScylarOS, Android, iOS – and other systems compared

ScylarOS is the third choice alongside iOS and Android. This page sets out how the systems differ – and, honestly, where other systems are better today. For ScylarOS we give our own information; for other systems only general information or information with a source.
Who is each system for?
ScylarOS is for you if you want a phone with a built-in AI that you name yourself, whose language model and speech recognition run on the device. The services for account, backup, store and updates run on our servers in Germany, and there is no ad tracking. In return, you accept that ScylarOS is in beta, runs on exactly one device, and that many well-known apps do not run or only with limitations.
Android or iOS suit you better if you rely on well-known apps – above all banking, payments and copy-protected streaming – or if you want to pay contactless with your phone. Neither system is in beta.
In short: if you need the full range of apps, Android or iOS is the better fit today. If you want an AI phone with a system of its own and services on servers in Germany, and you can live with the limits, take a look at SCYLAR One.

Where are other systems better than ScylarOS today?
We say this openly so you can make a good decision:
- App choice: The well-known apps are available for Android and iOS. On ScylarOS, many of them do not run or only with limitations – even with the app extension.
- Banking and payments: Many banking and payment apps rely on services from the large platform makers and do not run, or only with limitations, on ScylarOS. Contactless payment with the phone (NFC) does not work on ScylarOS yet.
- Maturity: ScylarOS is in beta. Calls over 4G (VoLTE) are not guaranteed with every mobile network, and in an emergency call your location is not yet sent automatically to the emergency centre.
- Choice of device: Today ScylarOS is available on exactly one device, SCYLAR One.
- Big AI tasks: The model on the device is small. For complex questions it is less capable than large cloud AIs; the larger AI via our servers only helps if you agree.
If any of these points is decisive for you, SCYLAR One is not the right choice for you today. The full list is in the beta notes (German).
Fairphone 5: ScylarOS or another system?
SCYLAR One is a new Fairphone 5 that we set up with ScylarOS and send to you ready to use – for €849 including VAT, device and setup, no subscription. The hardware is that of the Fairphone 5: 6.46-inch OLED at 90 Hz, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage (expandable by card), three 50 MP cameras, a replaceable 4,200 mAh battery, 5G, dual SIM, IP55.
What you should know: Fairphone makes the device. Fairphone has nothing to do with ScylarOS. With ScylarOS, the device no longer receives system updates from Fairphone – we deliver the updates for ScylarOS, for 5 years from delivery. For questions about ScylarOS, talk to us, not Fairphone.
If you want a Fairphone 5 with a different system, SCYLAR One is not the right choice: we only sell it with ScylarOS. Questions about the Fairphone 5 without ScylarOS are answered by its maker, Fairphone.
Frequently asked questions about the comparison
Is ScylarOS Android?
No. ScylarOS is an operating system of its own, neither Android nor iOS. Building blocks such as the kernel and device drivers come from open-source projects; licences and the source code offer are in the legal notices on the device.
Do banking apps run on ScylarOS?
Many do not, or only with limitations, because they rely on services from the large platform makers. If you depend on a specific app, ask us before you buy: support@scylaros.com.
Do I need an account for ScylarOS?
Yes. The Scylar ID is required. It connects setup, backup and your next device. The services behind it run on our servers in Germany.
Does the AI on ScylarOS work without the internet?
The language model and speech recognition run on the phone and work there without an internet connection. For more difficult tasks, your AI can ask a larger AI via our servers – only with your consent. The live translator uses the servers unless it is set to “local only”.
How long will SCYLAR One get updates?
We provide updates for ScylarOS for 5 years from delivery, as a download on the device. They are only installed once you agree.
How much is SCYLAR One?
€849 including VAT for the device and setup, no subscription. It ships in Germany first, in small numbers – anyone can join the waitlist: purchase in the shop with an access code, otherwise join the waitlist.
